On the persistent X-ray emission from the soft γ-ray repeaters

چکیده
It is suggested that the persistent X-ray emission from the soft γ-ray repeaters is the thermal radiation of neutron stars which is enhanced by a factor of 10 or more due to the effect of a very strong magnetic field on the thermal structure of the neutron star envelope. For the thermal luminosity to be consistent with the persistent X-ray luminosity, the field strength at the neutron star surface has to be of the order of 1015 G. If it is confirmed that the soft γ-ray repeaters are neutron stars with negligible accretion, then the presence of such a strongmagnetic field is inevitable.

Modelling magnetars’ high energy emission through Resonant Cyclotron Scattering
We present a systematic fit of a model of resonant cyclotron scattering (RCS) to the X and soft γ-ray data of four magnetars, including anomalous X-ray pulsars, and soft gamma repeaters. In this scenario, non-thermal magnetar spectra in the soft X-rays result from resonant cyclotron scattering of the thermal surface emission by hot magnetospheric plasma. We find that this model can successfully...
متن کاملXMM – Newton observations of Soft Gamma - ray Repeaters
All the confirmed Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters have been observed with the EPIC instrument on the XMM– Newton satellite. We review the results obtained in these observations, providing the most accurate spectra on the persistent X-ray emission in the 1–10 keV range for these objects, and discuss them in the context of the magnetar interpretation.

The magnetar model involves an isolated neutron star with a very high magnetic field (B ∼ 1014−15 G), and is invoked to explain the emission processes of two classes of sources, the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and the Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs). Five of them have been recently identified to be persistent sources in the hard X-ray band (20–200 keV). AXPs, in particular, present the harde...
متن کاملOn Radio Quiescence of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters
In the hot environments of the anomalous X-ray pulsars and the soft gamma-ray repeaters, as indicated by their luminous, pulsed, quiescent X-ray emission, γ-rays generated from the inner gaps may have shorter attenuation lengths via two photon pair production than via magnetic photon splitting. The AXP/SGR environments may not be pairless, even if photon splitting could completely suppress one ...

Soft γ-ray repeaters are at determined distances and their positions are known accurately. If observed, afterglows from their soft γ-ray bursts will provide important clues to the study of the so called " classical γ-ray bursts ". On applying the popular fireball/blastwave model of classical γ-ray bursts to soft γ-ray repeaters, it is found that their X-ray and optical afterglows are detectable...
